Re-reading James Herbert #4 - Fluke

This was actually my first time reading ‘Fluke’, but I had previously listened to it on audiobook a number of years ago. I recalled the basic story of the protagonist, Fluke, a dog with memories of being a man, and his intriguing journey to uncover the truth about his past. However, I had forgotten the ending, and it was nice to actually read a physical copy and follow Fluke’s journey at my own pace.

The story is a departure from James Herbert’s familiar horror novels, and after the disappointment of The Fog and the very poor The Survivor, Herbert finally grabs back some kudos with this charming fantasy novel.

Herbert's narrative skill brings Fluke to life and fosters a sense of empathy between the reader and this extraordinary canine.

One notable aspect of Fluke is how Herbert weaves suspense and mystery throughout the narrative. As Fluke unravels the enigma surrounding his existence, unexpected twists and turns keep readers engaged. Herbert maintains a delicate balance between suspense and emotional depth, adding to the intrigue of the story.

The exploration of the human-animal bond in Fluke is thought-provoking. Through Fluke's perspective, readers gain a deeper appreciation for the connection between humans and their animal companions. Themes of loyalty and love resonate within the pages, offering insights into the ties that transcend species boundaries.

Herbert's descriptive prose deserves recognition. His writing creates vivid imagery, immersing readers in Fluke's world and evoking a range of emotions. The natural landscapes and human behaviour are skilfully depicted, painting a vivid backdrop for the story.

Fluke is a commendable achievement by James Herbert, leaving a lasting impression on readers. It is a story that stretches across genres, inviting contemplation on identity, love, and the indomitable spirit. Whether you enjoy mystery, suspense, or heartfelt narratives, Fluke offers a satisfying exploration of these themes.

I recommend Fluke to readers seeking an engaging adventure. While it falls just short of a perfect five-star rating, it remains a captivating read that will leave you intrigued and entertained. James Herbert's storytelling prowess shines through, making Fluke a worthwhile addition to any bookshelf.
