Having read Alan Ball's autobiography a few years ago, I was dubious as to whether this book would be no more than a rehash of that. However, I was pleasantly surprised that this book is much more than that, and author David Tossell has done an excellent job of researching his subject.
The book looks in detail at Alan's career as a player for Blackpool, Everton, Arsenal, Southampton and England, and his managerial career. It doesn't sugarcoat the negative aspects of his personality, which would often rub people up the wrong way, as well as his less than impressive managerial record. Nevertheless, you get more of a feel for how one of England's best players lived his life and how football was his life.
If you love reading football biographies then you should definitely add this book to your 'to be read' list.
